Scientific Reason behind “Why there are bells in temples?”

Everyone knows that in every Hindu temple there are bells, and you can’t find any Hindu temple without a bell. People who are visiting the temple must and will ring the bell before entering the inner sanctum (Garbha Gudi or Garbha Gruha or womb-chamber) where the main idol is placed. But do you know the reason why we follow this practice?

Why there are Bells in Temples, Sound and it's effect

According to Agama Sastra

uthsatanam pisasatheh preenanam sahareh paramsannithana mamarthyanam ghantaayachalanath baveth”.

It means that “The bell is used to give sound for keeping evil forces away and the ring of the bell is pleasant to God.”

The scientific reason is, A Bell’s ring clears our mind and helps us stay sharp and keep our full concentration on devotional purpose while we are entering the inner sanctum.

The Temple bells are made of a mixture of various metals like Cadmium, Copper, Zinc, Nickel, Lead, Chromium, Manganese. Making a bell using a combination of these metals is not enough. The real science lies in the percentage at which of each of these metals are used in making the bell.

These bells are made in such a way that when they produce a sound it creates a unity in the Left and Right parts of our brains. The moment we ring the bell, it produces a sharp and Lasting sound which lasts for minimum of 7 seconds in echo mode. (if you found a bell whose sound doesn’t last for 7 seconds then it’s not made following the right standards)

The duration of echo is good enough to activate all our seven healing centres of our body(7 chakras defined in Yoga).  This results in emptying our brain from all our thoughts and helps us in entering a very sharp state where we can have good level of concentration.

Before you enter temple to awake you and prepare you for taste of awareness is the real reason behind temple bell. In other words, “it helps to ring to wake yourself Up!”. To an extent Fragrant generators, Low light lamps all form Ecosystem to create awareness.

  1. With all such ancient but scientific wisdom why is that we don’t have a practice of ringing bells, produced with technical perfection, at home. With the explanation above, it is useful to ring bells, especially before we and our children start studying their subjects. Or is the use of bells restricted to the temples only?

    1. @Abdul Rehman Pasha, The bell helps in emptying our brain from all our thoughts. But studying is an intellectual activity where we fill our brains with thoughts and information from media(books, audio, video etc). In other words, prayer or dhyan is the stillness of mind or the the emptiness of thoughts or the absence of intellect. On the other hand we use our intellect to study a subject like physics, chemistry, history etc.
